Grammatical Analysis Part I (2 credit hours)

Morphology involves the basic principles of analyzing the structure of words and discovering the meaning of each part. By comparing parts of words as they occur in various contexts, their meaning can be discovered. The rules which govern the occurrence of these parts can also be discovered and described. This analytical skill is developed through the use of graded problems based on a variety of language data taken from all over the world. The principles learned are universal and can be applied to any language.

Understanding the morphological structure of words makes language learning easier because the learner understands the parts of words and the rules which govern how they go together. Instead of learning a meaningless string of sounds, the language learner can understand the meaning of what he is saying and know how the string of sounds goes together for correct grammatical structure.
